Characterization of patients operated on for colorectal cancer
Abstract
Introduction: colorectal cancer is a global health problem due to its morbidity and mortality.
Objective: to characterize the patients operated on for colorectal cancer at the "Guillermo Domínguez" General Hospital of Puerto Padre, in the 2017-2019 triennium.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in a population made up of patients treated in the surgery service for colorectal cancer. The sample consisted of the 36 patients operated on for this neoplasm. Ethical principles were met.
Results: a high municipal incidence rate of colorectal cancer was observed in the three-year period (12.14 per 100,000 inhabitants). The average age was 62.2 years, with similar proportions between the sexes and geographical origin. Almost all of them had white skin color. Abdominal pain was the predominant symptom; ten patients underwent emergency surgery for acute abdominal symptoms and the tumor was defined by physical examination in 24 cases. In the colon, 72.20% of the neoplasms were located; 97.20% were adenocarcinomas. Surgical resection was feasible in 31 patients because the neoplasia was found in stages I and II.
Conclusions: the incidence rate of colorectal cancer in the municipality in the three-year period was high (12.14 per 100,000 inhabitants), in 97.20% of the cases the histological type of the tumor was a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Of the total number of patients operated on: 26 continued to be followed up by consultation and ten had died. This study adds evidence on the surgical care of the disease in a municipal hospital.Downloads
