Effectiveness of 2% sodium hypochlorite in the endodontic treatment of chronic dentoalveolar abscess
Abstract
Introduction: sodium hypochlorite is used for its wide antibacterial effect and its power to eliminate vital and non-vital tissue.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of 2 % sodium hypochlorite in the endodontic treatment of patients with chronic dentoalveolar abscess.
Methods: quasi-experimental study carried out in Sagua la Grande, between October/2017-June/2019, to a total of 47 adults between 19 and 59 years of age. After etiological corroboration, two groups were formed: 1 (experimental) with 22 patients treated with 2 % sodium hypochlorite and 2 (control) with 25 with 0.9 % saline. At three and seven days, post-treatment, a new clinical evaluation, bacteriological control and surgical technique were carried out. The non-parametric Chi Square test was used (95 % significance level, p<0.05). Ethical precepts were met.
Results: Streptococcus (42.55 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (34.04 %) predominated among the microorganisms. Patients with Staphylococcus aureus presented more clinical manifestations (42.55 %). The stench predominated in both groups (1:27.66 % and 2:23.40 %). With 2 % sodium hypochlorite, it was possible to eliminate a greater number of microorganisms and clinical manifestations after seven days than after 72 hours.
Conclusions: although there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of the presence of microorganisms and the effectiveness of the treatment, clinical changes were observed after treatment in group 1 from 72 hours to seven days, when the germs were almost completely eliminatedDownloads
