Introduction: squamous cell carcinoma is the most common dental malignancy and has the capacity for local destructive growth and distant metastasis.
Objective: to characterize patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma in the northern territory of the Ciego de Ávila province.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in 51 patients diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma who met the inclusion criteria, who were treated at the maxillofacial surgery service of the General Teaching Hospital of Morón. Ethical principles were met.
Results: prevailed in the male sex (76.47 %), in the group of 55 to 74 years (78.43 %), in the lower lip as a location (23.53 %), the clinical stage III (45.10 %) and lesions greater than four centimeters (72.55%). Almost all smoked (92.00%) and more than half consumed alcohol (55.00 %). 42.00 % had a personal pathological history of suffering from cancer and 36.00% had other associated diseases. Well-differentiated (50.98%) and moderately differentiated (29.41 %) lesions were the most frequent, especially in the age group of 55 to 74 years.
Conclusions: the largest number of patients were male and were between 55 and 74 years of age. The most frequent tumor location was in the lower lip. As a predisposing factor to oral cancer, tobacco use predominated. Most of the patients were found in clinical stage III and were classified as well-differentiated carcinomas.
