Variations of intra-abdominal pressure in laparotomized patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Ciego de Ávila
Abstract
An analytical observational cross-sectional study was carried out in laparotomized patients who were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of General Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola", Ciego de Ávila, between July 2012 and September 2013. The objective was to evaluate the variations of the intra-abdominal pressure according to causal and evolutionary factors. The universe consited of 63 patients. The predominant group was more than 60 years of age. Intestinal perforation presented higher median value of PIA (13.1 ± 5.6 cm H2O) no statistically significant association. There was a relationship between the median values of PIA and the appearances of renal, cardiovascular and respiratory complications (p<0,05). Intra-abdominal pressure in relaparotomized patients was 15,63 ± 5.37 cm H2O, whereas in patients who were not relaparotomized was 10.00 ± 3.95 cm H2O (p<0,05). Deceased patients had a PIA value of 17.91 ± 5.17 cm H2O, on the other hand, in survivors the pressure was 10.92 ± 4.46 cm H2O (p<0,05). Patients with postoperative complications and unfavorable results to discharge from the intensive care unit have a high intra-abdominal pressure than those who evolve favorably.
