Telomerasa. Enzima del futuro.
Abstract
El cáncer constituye una de las primeras causas de muerte en el mundo. Unos de los mayores desafíos de la medicina moderna es encontrar un tratamiento efectivo para esta enfermedad. Sin embargo el desconocimiento que ha existido acerca de su causa a nivel molecular ha impedido el desarrollo de estrategias terapéuticas. En estos momentos se vislumbran elementos esperanzadores debido a los avances obtenidos en la genética molecular y en técnicas como el ADN recombinante. El descubrimiento de la enzima telomerasa y su expresión diferencial en las células cancerosas la convierten en un blanco extremadamente atractivo para el desarrollo de estrategias terapéuticas. Por la importancia del tema y su actualidad a través de un trabajo bibliográfico referativo se interpretan los hallazgos más recientes sobre los mecanismos moleculares de regulación de la actividad de las telomerasas y su aplicación en el tratamiento del cáncer.
