Characterization of astigmatism due to the cataract post-surgery with Blumenthal technique. Ophthalmological Center “Eloy Alfaro” in Ecuador, 2010
Abstract
Introduction: The astigmatism is common after the cataract surgery. Method: An observational, descriptive and cross- sectional investigation was carried out with the aim to characterize the astigmatism post cataract surgery with Blumenthal skill in the Ophthalmological Center “Eloy Alfaro”, Ecuador, during 2010. The series was constituted by 56 patients. The following variables age, sex, visual acuity without correction and with it, pre and post surgical, astigmatism pre and post surgical and complications were analyzed by means of percentage, average, standard deviation, Chi-square and t test of Student. Results: Prevailed patients between 60 and 75 years (41, 07%) and women (58, 92%). The average age was 66, 1 ± 12, 4 years. The corrected vision showed to have significant relation with surgery. From 67, 85% of patients with values lower than 0,1, only 3,57% did not improve and 53,57 % reached vision superior to 0,6. The total of patients increased with astigmatism between pre and the postoperative one (89, 28 % to 98, 28%), with respective change of 1, 43 ± 0, 79 to 2, 20 ± 0, 99 diopters, average increase of 0,78 (p=0,000) and induction in 9,09% of the operated patients. The 33, 92 % of patients had complications, the most frequent complication was the tunnel suture (52, 63%), the left eye were the most affected (57,89 %). Conclusions: There was significant vision improvement three months after the surgery, with an astigmatism increase in the postsurgical one.Downloads
