Temporomandibular dysfunction, dental clenching and grinding related to anxiety and parafunctional habits
Abstract
It was carried out an analytical study of cases and control; the sample was represented by 100 patients between 15 and 50 years of age, of both sexes. Half of them (study group) presented signs and symptoms of dysfunction that made them looking for a treatment, and the rest of the sample (control group) did not present functional alterations which can indicate temporomandibular dysfunction. To determine the dysfunction existence it was used Krough Paulsen test and the level of anxiety were determined by means of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory which was conceived by Spielberger in 1966. The parafunctional habits analyzed were: dental clenching and grinding, tongue bite, lips, cheeks and other objects, onychophagia, unilateral mastication and lingual protraction. Of all these parafunctional habits dental clenching and grinding were the ones which are more significantly associated with the temporomandibular dysfunction, followed by the unilateral mastication and the bite of lips, tongue and cheeks. Regarding anxiety it is important to highlight that among the dysfunctional individuals were more frequent the high levels of anxiety, especially anxiety as a characteristic of the personality.Downloads
