Intervención educativa a cuidadores de pacientes con demencia de Alzheimer del área norte de Morón

Abstract

Las demencias en general y la enfermedad de Alzheimer en particular, se han convertido en un problema creciente, es un trastorno degenerativo del cerebro y llega a afectar severamente las actividades de la vida diaria de quienes la padecen. Se realizó un estudio de intervención educativa pre-experimental de tipo antes-después a cuidadores de adultos mayores con demencia de Alzheimer del área norte de Morón, de enero a julio del 2009, con el objetivo de elevar el nivel de conocimientos de estos sobre el manejo de los pacientes portadores de esta enfermedad mediante la aplicación de una estrategia de intervención educativa. El universo estuvo constituido por 30 cuidadores. Predominaron los cuidadores de 50 a 59 años para un 59.9%, sexo femenino en un 93.3%, el 80% eran amas de casa anteriormente; el 90% tenían vínculos consanguíneos con los enfermos. Se evaluaron antes y después de la intervención los conocimientos sobre los temas: qué hacer ante un cuadro de agitación o agresividad en el adulto mayor, qué capacidades (perdidas o conservadas) se deben enfatizar en el paciente con demencia, así como la frecuencia de alimentación y baño de este. Al concluir la intervención se comprobó que los cuidadores elevaron el nivel de conocimientos sobre los temas tratados
