Probióticos y salud humana

Resumen

El uso de microorganismos probióticos no es reciente, desde tiempos inmemorables el hombre ha hecho uso de ellos empíricamente, recientemente se han estudiado y se revelan los mecanismos a través de los cuales ejercen efectos beneficiosos en la salud humana y alivian variadas patologías. Este trabajo consiste en una panorámica actualizada del conocimiento de los probióticos, de sus características, su modo de acción, así como del efecto beneficioso que tienen en la salud humana. También muestra el importante papel en el funcionamiento del sistema digestivo y los distintos métodos a través de los cuales ejercen efectos favorables: competición con bacterias nocivas por desplazamiento de su sitio de unión al epitelio e inhibición de su crecimiento y muerte mediante la producción de compuestos antibacterianos o reducción del pH; mejora de la función de barrera intestinal; producción de nutrientes importantes para la función intestinal, así como la inmunomodulación. Se reflexiona acerca del uso de los probióticos como alternativa en el tratamiento de variadas enfermedades que afectan la salud humana, siempre se tendrá en consideración que el correcto uso de ellos, la cepa usada y la dosis serán factores vitales en el éxito.
