Follow-up of patients with low birth weight in primary health care

Introduction: low birth weight increases the risk of morbidity and mortality, and the first years of life are critical for skill development.
Objective: to propose actions for the follow-up of patients with a history of low birth weight until five years of age in primary health care.
Methods: a developmental research was carried out through a cross-sectional analytical observational design in the “Pedro Díaz Coello” Polyclinic of Holguín from 2022 to 2024. The universe consisted of 2 066 newborns registered in this health area, in the study period. The purposive sample included children under five years of age residing in the health area (123 patients). Known variables influencing the growth and development of low birth weight infants were studied, and based on a review of relevant data, actions are proposed that could facilitate proper follow-up of these patients. The ethical principles of scientific research were followed.
Results: 41.46 % of the patients were between one and three years old, and 52.03 % were female. 57.72% showed normal growth, 68.29% showed normal development, and 68.29% weighed between 1 500 and 2 499 grams at birth. Unfavorable socioeconomic factors were identified in 65.85% and those related to nutrition in 61.79 %.
Conclusions: 16 essential actions are proposed to complement the care of children with low birth weight, after the first year of life.
