Family health outcomes associated with childbirth

Introduction: the arrival of a new family member requires structural and functional changes. The effects of this transition depend on multiple factors, making each case unique.
Objective: to describe family health outcomes associated with childbirth.
Methods: a quantitative, cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in 49 families receiving care at the “Mario Escalona” Polyclinic (Pinar del Río), in which births occurred between September 2023 and February 2024. The variables analyzed included the impact of significant family life events, adaptive resources, social support, and effects on family health. Ethical and bioethical principles, as well as the Declaration of Helsinki, were observed.
Results: in 63.30 % of families, the birth of a child was a health-promoting event for family health, while in 30.60 % it was predisposing to health disturbances. Most families had sufficient adaptive resources and frequent to very frequent social support. In 73.40 % of cases, family health disturbances were mild, with severe disturbances reported in one case.
Conclusions: the birth of a child was a significant life event that had a minimal impact on family health; its health-promoting effect prevailed. Health disturbances were less frequent among families experiencing the birth of their first child, those with sufficient adaptive resources, and those receiving very frequent social support. The findings provide sufficient evidence to standardize protective factors for family health in the context of childbirth, as well as to counteract risk factors through the implementation of appropriate intervention strategies.
