What is the usefulness of the structure and organization of scientific articles?

Introduction: the use of the introduction, method, result and discussion model is widespread in the structure and organization of scientific articles, including those related to scientific communication in the field of health.
Objective: to describe the usefulness of the conventional introduction, method, result and discussion model of structure and organization of scientific articles for the field of health.
Methods: a narrative literature review was carried out, covering the period 2020-2024, using information sources from the SciELO, PubMed and RedALyC databases, published in Spanish or English. The search engine used was Google Scholar, and the following descriptors were used: introduction, method, result and discussion model, scientific writing, scientific article, and public health research. Four books, seven regulatory documents, and 16 articles (two review articles and 14 opinion pieces) were examined for the period 2020–2024.
Development: there is almost unanimous agreement in recognizing the usefulness of the model: introduction, method, result and discussion as the most effective and ethical structure for the scientific article and not only in public health. In the Mexican context, the frequency of health problems in the community represents a valuable source for the preparation of scientific writings, and there is an abundance of articles on these health problems that generally comply with the structure and organization of the writing, but not with the content required by the editors of the publications in terms of the components of this model.
Conclusions: the conventional introduction, method, result and discussion model for the structure and organization of scientific articles is recognized as having a useful purpose, supported by its theoretical and methodological foundations, and its acceptance as a requirement for scientific publications in general and in the health field in particular. The results of applying the model to a scientific article reinforced the assessment of its usefulness.
