Impact of diabetic foot ulcers in the social sphere

Introduction: diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that can lead to serious complications, including diabetic foot, one of the most devastating and common.
Objective: to analyze the impact of diabetic foot ulcers on the health, economy and quality of life of patients.
Methods: a review of national and international literature was carried out in recognized databases such as Scielo, Pubmed and Clinical Key using the Google Scholar search engine in Spanish and English. 35 articles were reviewed and 25 were used, which were published between 2019 and 2024.
Development: diabetic foot ulcer is a severe complication of diabetes mellitus that considerably affects the physical and mental health of patients. The increasing incidence of these represents a significant economic burden with deterioration in quality of life and limitations in daily activities. A multidisciplinary approach that considers both medical and psychosocial aspects is needed to improve the overall well-being of patients.
Conclusions: diabetic foot ulcers represent a health challenge that requires a comprehensive approach. It is vital to combine medical care with psychosocial considerations, implement prevention strategies and promote self-care education. Health systems must adopt evidence-based measures to improve quality of life and prevent this disease.
