Introduction: active screening is a set of diagnostic actions to identify the individual health status in population groups, determine the risk factors existing in them, and discover hidden morbidity in a timely manner.
Objective: to characterize the research activity carried out by students of the University of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the “Josué País García” Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba between May 28 and June 28, 2024. 89 students and eight professors from the University participated in the active survey. The variables taken into account were: homes visited, closed, searched, people searched over and under 15 years of age, educational activities, environmental risks, patients with symptoms associated with dengue or oropouche fever. The data were obtained from daily reports.
Results: of the 4,262 homes visited, 56.80% were screened, and 6,623 people (76 % aged 15 years or older). 160 patients with symptoms of dengue or oropouche were detected; the most frequent were fever (96.90 %) and joint pain (55.60%). In the following weeks, 22.50 % still had symptoms.
Conclusions: The community work of the students contributed to the control of arboviruses and enabled them to systematize their communication and observation skills in the field. The study provided evidence on the social utility and importance of involving medical science students in research work in complex epidemiological situations
