Introduction: from a socioeconomic point of view, inguinal hernias are responsible for more than 10 million lost work days per year, with exponential increases in their incidence rate.
Objective: to characterize patients with inguinal hernias.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the “Martín Chang Puga” Municipal General Teaching Hospital in the period from September 2021 to December 2023. Using simple random sampling, a sample of 85 patients was selected. The information was obtained from individual medical records and compiled in a form. The variables analyzed were age, sex, risk factors, presentation of the inguinal hernia, diagnosis, status of the deep inguinal ring and posterior wall, type of hernia, and recurrence. The ethical principles of the research were fulfilled.
Results: 98.80 % of patients with inguinal hernias were men aged 60 to 69 years (44.70 %). In 47.10 % of cases, hernias were diagnosed on the right side. The majority (56.50 %) were incarcerated, and 30.60 % were type IIIB. Smoking was the predominant risk factor (35.30 %).
Conclusions: patients were predominantly men in their sixth decade of life. Smoking was the most common risk factor. Type IIIB hernias, right location, and incarceration were the most frequent. The characterization provided by the present study –although it is from a Cuban province– showed the most frequent hernial variables, which may be useful in future analytical research.
