Introduction: training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for students at medical universities should be conceived early in the study curriculum.
Objective: present the current state of training programs in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and some strategies applied for their optimization in medical universities in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Methods: the analytical-synthetic method was used to process the bibliographic sources. 31 publications were chosen, 81 % from the last five years. The majority, original articles obtained from the databases PubMed, SciELO, Dialnet, Medigraphic, Redalyc, and the Google Academic search engine, in Spanish and English.
Development: the review showed that students at medical universities have insufficient knowledge about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Some methods used to optimize training programs in the subject are described, based on hybrid and virtual reality teaching methods: gamification, simulation of cases with mannequins, annual workshops under the tutelage of specialists, and educational interventions with online training courses. In most programs, the periodicity of the training was not specified to guarantee the retention of the acquired knowledge and skills.
Conclusions: theoretical and practical insufficiencies were identified in the cardiopulmonary resuscitation training programs of different medical universities. Your redesign must include balanced and periodic training. Which would guarantee that health profiles students reaffirm their knowledge and skills on life-saving procedures. This work provides essential data for the improvement of these programs.
