Propolis tincture at 12 % vs calendula in mouthwash for pericoronitis treatment
Abstract
Introduction: pericoronitis is an acute infectious process characterized by inflammation of the soft tissue surrounding the retained tooth.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of propolis (Apis mellifera propolis) and calendula (Calendula officinalis L.) in the treatment of pericoronitis.
Methods: a controlled and randomized experimental study was carried out. We worked with a universe of 132 patients diagnosed with acute pericoronitis, treated in the emergency room of the Levisa Stomatological Clinic from February 2018 to January 2019. The population was randomly organized into two groups of 66 people each; Group A was given 12 % propolis tincture, and B cold calendula mouthwashes. The variables were evaluated: age, sex, form of presentation, evolution of the disease and effectiveness of the treatment. Descriptive statistics and the chi-square statistic were used as tests of independence. Ethical principles were met.
Results: the disease prevailed in the female sex (64.39 %) and in the age group of 15 to 18 years (58.33 %). In both groups, acute suppurative pericoronitis predominated (68.18 % in A, and 65.15% in B). At the end of the treatment, the patients were cured, regardless of the form of the condition presentation.
Conclusions: both natural medicines were effective; in the patients that 12% propolis tincture was used, the healing time was shorterDownloads
