Clinical-epidemiologic characterization of patients with pterigyum produced with the conjunctival autograft
Abstract
Considering the high frequency that the pterygium has in Ecuador, a descriptive and transverse study that was carried out in the “Eloy Alfaro” Ophthalmological Center of Latacunga, with the objective to characterize clinical and epidemiological the patients with pterygium operated with the autograft conjunctival technique in the first semester of 2010, in a universe represented by 1 172 patients. There were analyzed the variables age, sex, origin, form of diagnosis, motive of consultation, grade of pterygium, affected eye, occupation, associate illnesses and postoperative complications. The pterygium it presented with major frequency in patients between 37 and 48 years (32,76 %), of the feminine sex (57,84 %), workers of services (47,01 %) and of rural origin (60,23 %). The main consultation motive was the "outgrowth" (42,32%), there predominated over the pterygium grade II (57,84 %), and the unilateral affectation of the right eye (53,83 %). 7,59 % of the patients recounted the precedent of some illness and relapse was the main surgical complication (4,94 %). In spite of being the conjunctivae auto-graft more complex and laborious and of needing major skill of the surgeon and operative time, it has advantages in its results.Downloads
