Abstract
Introduction: oral health care is one of the priority strategies of the Ministry of Public Health. According to recommendations of the World Health Organization, Cuba began a rescue work of natural therapies.
Objective: to describe the population’s level of knowledge about the techniques of Natural and Traditional Medicine used in Stomatology.
Method: a descriptive observational study was carried out at the Doctor's Office No.103 from University Polyclinic “Belkis Sotomayor Álvarez” in Ciego de Avila, from January to May 2014. The universe was formed by 854 patients older than 18 years and the sample was composed of 284 patients who met the inclusion criteria, representing 30%. The selection was made by a simple random sampling. Absolute numbers and percentages were used as measures.
Results: predominantly female sex, with ages between 35 and 59 years and a half educational level, which corresponds with moderate knowledge of Natural and Traditional Medicine found in patients. The more known methods, techniques or procedures were acupuncture and acupressure. Most respondents acquired their knowledge of Natural and Traditional Medicine through family and friends. The most widely used technique in Stomatology was phytotherapy; 53,1% assessed the treatment as very effective.
Conclusions: It is necessary to raise the level of knowledge of the population about the effectiveness of the techniques of Natural and Traditional Medicine in oral careDownloads
