Surgimiento y desarrollo de los hospitales de la ciudad de Ciego de Ávila

Abstract

La necesidad de conocer la historia de las principales instituciones de salud que brindaron servicio a la población y las escasas fuentes de literatura que recogen estos temas, motivaron la realización del presente trabajo cuyos objetivos persiguen constituir un documento histórico de un valor imperecedero que aborda la historia del sector de la salud y contribuir a la formación de las nuevas generaciones de médicos y personal de la salud. En su elaboración se consultaron revistas y periódicos de la época, así como entrevistas a personalidades conocedoras de la historia de Ciego de Ávila. Sus resultados recogen las características de las instituciones de salud, desde la aparición en 1871 del primer Hospital Militar Español que radicó en los terrenos situados en la calle Libertad donde se construyó posteriormente el antiguo Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Ciego de Ávila que ocupa en la actualidad la biblioteca provincial, hasta la construcción en el año 1951 del hospital civil al que se otorga el nombre del digno médico mambí, Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola, situado en el antiguo reparto Clarita, actualmente calle Máximo Gómez
